ABSTRACT

@#Arthropods of medical importance such as mosquitoes, ticks and sandflies are one of the key drivers of arthropod-borne diseases outbreak, posing a great threat to global public health security. For further understanding the transmission mechanisms of arthropod-borne diseases and establishing the prevention and control measures, a series of experiments of arthropods infection need to be carried out under laboratory conditions. Besides the regular biosafety requirements, some specific considerations need to be taken into account when performing arthropod infection and the infected arthropod rearing. Except for the physical containment composed of biosafety facilities, a comprehensive assessment of the biosafety risks during operations and corresponding preventive measures are also critical to eliminate or mitigate the biosafety risks. In this paper, we introduce our practice in handling mosquito infection with Risk Group 2 pathogens in Arthropod Containment Level-2 (ACL-2) laboratory, with an aim to provide a reference for researchers in related fields.

ABSTRACT

Arbovirus is a group of virus transmitted by blood-sucking arthropod bites, which infects both arthropods and vertebrates. More than 600 arboviruses have been characterized worldwide until now, including 65 highly pathogenic viruses, which pose a high threat to public health. The risk of arbovirus transmission is increasing due to climate change, international trade and urbanization. The review summarizes the discovery and distribution of emerging and reemerging arboviruses and novel arboviruses with potential pathogenic risks, and proposes responses to the arbovirus transmission risk, so as to provide insights into the research and management of arboviruses and arthropod-borne infectious diseases in China.

ABSTRACT

Las orugas del género Lonomia, del orden Lepidoptera y familia Saturnidae, son de interés médico en Sudamérica por ser causantes del lonomismo, tipo de envenenamiento que aumenta cada vez más en Colombia, con tasas de mortalidad de 2,5 %. La severidad es variable y los casos no son de notificación obligatoria, lo que lleva a un subregistro de estos eventos. Se presenta el caso de una mujer adulta joven, quien acude a urgencias por la picadura de 20 orugas Lonomia en la palma de la mano izquierda; presentó signos locales inflamatorios, dolor y limitación de la movilidad de la mano. Se hospitalizó por tres días, se clasificó como leve y se trató con analgesia y antihistamínico endovenoso, lo que logró favorable evolución. El envenenamiento por oruga Lonomia es una urgencia que puede ser mortal, por tanto, es importante que se conozcan estos eventos en la literatura para su adecuado abordaje.


Caterpillars of the genus Lonomia, of the order Lepidoptera, family Saturnidae are of medical interest in South America for being the cause of lonomism, poisoning that is increasing more and more in Colombia, with mortality rates of 2.5%, the severity is variable and they are not mandatory notification, which leads to an underreporting of these events. We present the case of a young adult woman, who went to the emergency room due to the bite of 20 Lonomia caterpillars in the palm of her left hand, generating local inflammatory signs, pain and limitation of hand mobility. She was hospitalized for 3 days, classified as mild and treated with analgesia and intravenous antihistamine; which achieved favorable evolution. Therefore, it was concluded that Lonomia caterpillar poisoning is an emergency, which can be fatal. It is important that these events are known in the literature for their proper approach.

Abstract Introduction: Tropical Andean and Amazonian ecosystems shape the great biodiversity found in Peru. However, studies on mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in the country are scarce, resulting in an information gap regarding their diversity, ecology, distribution, and abundance. Objective: To search for documented evidence on the diversity and distribution of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Peru, and to establish -in relation to species of medical relevance- their potential link with the epidemiological cycle of some metaxenic diseases. Materials and methods: A literature review was conducted in Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, PubMed, and SciELO, as well as in 7 databases specialized in insect taxonomy, using specific terms and their combinations by means of Boolean operators ("AND" and "OR"). Search strategy: study types: original research articles, review articles, books, and book chapters; publication period: no initial date - June 2020; languages: English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Results: A total of 99 studies were retrieved after the initial search, 84 in the 4 electronic databases and 15 in the specialized databases, of which 41 met the inclusion criteria. One additional record was included due to its relevance to the objective of the review. The studies included were original articles (n=28), review articles (n=6), books (n=5), book chapters (n=2), and undergraduate theses (n=1). Regarding the language of publication, 25 (59.52%) were published in English and 17 (40.48%) in Spanish. Conclusions: In Peru, the greatest diversity of mosquito genera is found in the departments of Loreto, Huánuco, and Madre de Dios. Knowledge of the diversity of mosquitoes in Peru that have the potential to cause health issues is relatively scarce and is focused on Aedes aegypti and some species of the Anopheles and Culex genera, thus overlooking a rich diversity distributed in the Amazonian forests, high jungle, and inter-Andean valleys.


Resumen Introducción. Los ecosistemas tropicales andinos y amazónicos determinan la gran biodiversidad presente en Perú. Sin embargo, los estudios sobre mosquitos (Diptera: Culicidae) en el país son escasos, lo que resulta en un vacío de información en cuanto a su diversidad, ecología, distribución y abundancia. Objetivos. Buscar evidencia documentada sobre la diversidad y la distribución de mosquitos en el Perú, y establecer -con relación a las especies de importancia médica- su potencial vínculo con el ciclo epidemiológico de algunas enfermedades metaxénicas. Materiales y métodos. Se realizó una revisión de la literatura en Google Académico, ScienceDirect, PubMed y Scielo, así como en siete bases de datos especializadas en taxonomía de insectos, usando términos específicos y diferentes combinaciones con operadores booleanos ("AND" y "OR"). Estrategia de búsqueda: tipos de estudios: artículos originales de investigación, artículos de revisión, libros y capítulos de libros; periodo de publicación: sin límite inicial a junio del 2020; idiomas: inglés, español y portugués. Resultados. La búsqueda inicial arrojó 99 estudios, 84 en las 4 bases de datos electrónicas y 15 en las bases de datos especializadas, de los cuales 41 cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. También se incluyó un registro adicional debido a su relevancia con el objetivo de la revisión. Los estudios incluidos fueron artículos originales (n=28), artículos de revisión (n=6), libros (n=5), capítulos de libro (n=2) y tesis de pregrado (n=1). Respecto al idioma de publicación, 25 (59.52%) estaban en inglés y 17 (40.48%), en español. Conclusiones. En Perú, la mayor diversidad de géneros de mosquitos se encuentra presente en los departamentos de Loreto, Huánuco y Madre de Dios. El conocimiento sobre la diversidad de mosquitos en Perú que tienen el potencial de generar problemas de salud es relativamente escaso y se centra en el Aedes aegypti y algunas especies de los géneros Anopheles y Culex, dejando de lado una rica diversidad distribuida en los bosques amazónicos, la selva alta y los valles interandinos.

ABSTRACT

Background: Venomous arthropods are arthropod species that use toxins for defense and offense. The objective of this study was to assess the biodiversity and abundance of venomous arthropods on the premises of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Nigeria. Materials and Methods: Pitfall traps, sticky, and bait traps, beating and knockdown, and active search and handpicking with forceps were the methods used to collect various arthropods on the university campus. The data collected during this study were analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences version 23.0. Results: A total of 1,070 venomous arthropods were collected from the study areas, and they belong to four classes, six orders, fourteen families, and twenty-two species of the phylum Arthropoda. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that venomous arthropods are widespread on the NAU, Awka campus. Regular fumigation of the university premises is important in preventing human injuries, and infectious diseases carried by some arthropods.

RESUMEN Contrario a lo que se cree, los milpiés no se consideran animales venenosos, su mecanismo de defensa puede resultar perjudicial para el ser humano, manifestándose como lesiones de carácter eritematoso, purpúrico y cianótico, concomitante dolor local y parestesia; Según la exposición, el cuadro clínico puede evolucionar a lesiones moderadas y severas, ampollas y úlceras. Describimos el caso de un paciente pediátrico de sexo masculino de la región andina de Colombia, con temperaturas diarias que oscilan entre 15° y 30°C y una humedad promedio de 72 %, quien accidentalmente pisó un milpiés, lo cual fue un desafío diagnóstico entre el personal de salud que generó su atención.


ABSTRACT Millipedes are not considered poisonous animals, although in some cases their chemical defense mechanisms may be deleterious for human beings, manifesting as erythematous, purpuric and/ or cyanotic lesions alongside local pain and paresthesia. According to the exposure, the clinical condition may progress to moderate and severe lesions such as ulcers and blisters. We describe a case of a male child from the Andean region in Colombia, an area with daily temperatures between 15° and 30° C and 72% average humidity. The boy accidentally stepped on a millipede, and this occurrence became a challenge for its diagnosis amongst staff who provided emergency health care.

ABSTRACT

Accidents with venomous animals are a public health issue worldwide. Among the species involved in these accidents are scorpions, spiders, bees, wasps, and other members of the phylum Arthropoda. The knowledge of the function of proteins present in these venoms is important to guide diagnosis, therapeutics, besides being a source of a large variety of biotechnological active molecules. Although our understanding about the characteristics and function of arthropod venoms has been evolving in the last decades, a major aspect crucial for the function of these proteins remains poorly studied, the posttranslational modifications (PTMs). Comprehension of such modifications can contribute to better understanding the basis of envenomation, leading to improvements in the specificities of potential therapeutic toxins. Therefore, in this review, we bring to light protein/toxin PTMs in arthropod venoms by accessing the information present in the UniProtKB/Swiss-Prot database, including experimental and putative inferences. Then, we concentrate our discussion on the current knowledge on protein phosphorylation and glycosylation, highlighting the potential functionality of these modifications in arthropod venom. We also briefly describe general approaches to study "PTM-functional-venomics", herein referred to the integration of PTM-venomics with a functional investigation of PTM impact on venom biology. Furthermore, we discuss the bottlenecks in toxinology studies covering PTM investigation. In conclusion, through the mining of PTMs in arthropod venoms, we observed a large gap in this field that limits our understanding on the biology of these venoms, affecting the diagnosis and therapeutics development. Hence, we encourage community efforts to draw attention to a better understanding of PTM in arthropod venom toxins.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Objective:To understand the reported incidence level, change of the trend, epidemic characteristics and spatial clustering of scrub typhus in Nanjing, to explore key seasons, populations and areas for prevention and control, and to guide formulation of scientific and precise prevention and control strategies and measures.Methods:The reported data of scrub typhus in Nanjing from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2020 were collected in the "Infectious Disease Surveillance System" from Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The reported incidence level and change of the trend were analyzed, and the seasonal, population and spatial distribution characteristics were described. Global spatial autocorrelation analysis was carried out by ArcGIS 10.3 software, and the spatial clustering scanning was carried out by using FleXScan 3.1.2 software.Results:A total of 192 cases of scrub typhus were reported in Nanjing from 2011 to 2020. Median annual reported incidence was 0.21/100 000 (0.12/100 000 - 0.49/100 000). Totally 87.5% (168/192) of cases were reported from October to November, and the peak occurred in November (57.8%, 111/192). Among these cases, males accounted for 64.1% (123/192); and the median age was 59 years old (6 - 84 years old). The groups ≥60 years old and 45 - 59 years old accounted for 47.9% (92/192) and 31.2% (60/192), respectively, which accounted for 79.2% (152/192) in all groups. Farmers accounted for 43.8% (84/192), household chores and unemployed people accounted for 16.7% (32/192), retired persons accounted for 15.6% (30/192) and workers accounted for 6.8% (13/192), which accounted for 82.8% (159/192) in all occupations. The top four areas in the total number of reported cases were Jiangning District (23.4%, 45/192), Luhe District (22.9%, 44/192), Gulou District (10.4%, 20/192) and Jiangbei New Area (8.9%, 17/192), which accounted for 65.6% (126/192) in all districts. According to global spatial autocorrelation analysis, Moran's I = 0.34 ( Z = 5.90, P < 0.001). FlexScan 3.1.2 software scanned and detected two spatial clusters areas, the first-class of cluster area covered three streets in Jiangning District, one street in Yuhuatai District and two streets in Pukou District [restricted log likelihood ratio ( RLLR) = 26.91, P < 0.001]. The second-class of cluster area included six townships/streets in Luhe District and four streets in Jiangbei New Area ( RLLR = 26.48, P < 0.001). All the cluster areas were agriculture-related. Conclusions:The reported incidence level of scrub typhus in Nanjing is low and stable which belongs to a typical autumn epidemic area. The middle-aged and elderly population is the key population and the agriculture-related area is key area. It is suggested that scrub typhus should be included in the management of statutory or regional key infectious diseases in Nanjing. Additionally, training on diagnosis and treatment technology and information report management of scrub typhus need to be carried out, and comprehensive prevention and control interventions such as health education, personal protection, rodent prevention and control and vector control should be strengthened and implemented in the high incidence season.

Abstract In this study, whole blood samples and ticks were collected from 57 capybaras in recreational areas in the Federal District, Brazil, aiming to investigate the presence of Rickettsia spp. using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and indirect immunofluorescence (IFAT) assays. None of the capybara blood samples yielded rickettsial DNA by PCR. Among 55 capybara serum samples tested by IFAT, 53 (96.3%) reacted to Rickettsia spp. Among these, 21 (39.6%) identified the R. bellii antigen as the probable antigen involved in a homologous reaction (PAIHR), whereas 2 (3.8%) identified the R. parkeri antigen. Ticks collected from capybaras were identified as 173 Amblyomma sculptum and 410 A. dubitatum, in addition to nine Amblyomma spp. larvae. A sample of 231 ticks was subjected to DNA extraction and PCR for Rickettsia species. None of 122 A. sculptum yielded rickettsial DNA. Molecular evidence of R. bellii was found in 25/108 (23.1%) and of Rickettsia sp. strain Cooperi (R. parkeri-like agent) in 2/108 (1.9%) of the A. dubitatum samples. These results suggest a greater exposure to R. bellii in these capybara populations, in addition to a more significant number of A. dubitatum, which might characterize the Federal District region as not endemic for Brazilian spotted fever.


Resumo O presente trabalho realizou a coleta de amostras de sangue total e carrapatos de 57 capivaras da região, com o intuito de pesquisar bactérias do gênero Rickettsia spp., a partir de métodos de diagnóstico molecular (PCR) e sorológicos (RIFI). Nenhuma amostra de sangue das capivaras foi positiva na PCR. Dentre as 55 amostras de soro testadas por RIFI, 53 (96,3%) apresentaram soro-reação para Rickettsia spp. Dessas 53 amostras, 21 (39,6%) demonstraram o antígeno de R. bellii como provável antígeno envolvido em reação homóloga (PAERH); e duas (3,8%) demonstraram o antígeno de R. parkeri. Foram amostrados 173 carrapatos identificados como Amblyomma sculptum e 410 como Amblyomma dubitatum, além de nove larvas (Amblyomma spp.). Entre os carrapatos, 231 foram submetidos à extração de DNA e PCR para pesquisa de Rickettsia. Foram encontradas evidências moleculares de R. bellii em 25/108 (23,1%) e Rickettsia sp. "strain" Cooperi em 2/108 (1,9%) das amostras de A. dubitatum testadas. Os resultados sugerem uma maior exposição à R. bellii nas populações de capivaras da região, além de uma maior quantidade de carrapatos identificados como A. dubitatum. Isso pode estar relacionado ao que configura a região do Distrito Federal como não endêmica para a febre maculosa brasileira.

RESUMEN Las garrapatas son artrópodos de gran impacto sobre la economía pecuaria y la salud humana debido a las pérdidas generadas en la producción, y a su capacidad de transmitir microorganismos. Pese a la evidencia de circulación de una gran diversidad de garrapatas en Colombia, no se cuenta con compilaciones actualizadas de la variedad de especies presentes, por lo cual los autores presentan una revisión de literatura sobre las garrapatas de la familia Ixodidae reportadas en Colombia incluyendo su distribución geográfica, sus hospederos y los microorganismos reportados en aquellas especies registradas en este país. En la recopilación se evidenció la presencia en Colombia de diferentes especies de garrapatas de los géneros Amblyomma, Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Rhipicephalus y Dermacentor. El género con mayor variedad fue Amblyomma con 29 especies, seguido de Ixodes con 11 especies, y de los géneros Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis y Rhipicephalus se reportaron dos especies para cada uno. Las especies se distribuyeron en la mayoría de los departamentos de Colombia y en una amplia diversidad de hospederos entre los cuales se incluyen animales domésticos, sinantrópicos y silvestres. Adicionalmente se encontró que algunas garrapatas reportadas podrían jugar un papel como vectores potenciales de diversos microorganismos que pueden afectar a la salud publica y veterinaria. Esperamos que este trabajo sea un aporte para apoyar la investigación en garrapatas y el estudio de los agentes transmitidos por estas en Colombia.


ABSTRACT Ticks are arthropods with significant impact on the economy of livestock and public health, due to losses generated in production, and their ability to transmit microorganisms. Despite the evidence of circulation of different tick species in the country, there are no updates concerning the variety of existing species, therefore, the authors of this manuscript offer a literature review on ticks from the Ixodidae family reported in Colombia including their geographical distribution, their hosts and the microorganisms they carry and might transmit in Colombia. In this manuscript, we described the presence in the country of different species of ticks of the genera Amblyomma, Ixodes, Haemaphysalis, Rhipicephalus, and Dermacentor. The genus with the greatest variety was Amblyomma with 29 species, followed by Ixodes with 11 species, and of the genus Dermacentor, Haemaphysalis and Rhipicephalus two species were reported for each. These species are distributed in most departments and a wide variety of hosts, including domestic, synanthropic and wild animals. Additionally, it was found that some reported ticks could play a role as potential vectors of various microorganisms that could affect public and veterinary health. We expect that this work will be a contribution to support tick research and the study of tick-borne agents in Colombia.

ABSTRACT

Rickettsial infections (Rickettsioses) are the causes of acute fever found in Thailand. It is classified as acute febrile illnesses transmitted by bloodsucking arthropod vectors (tick, flea, and chigger). This research investigated pathogens of scrub typhus in vectors from Bangkaew District, Phatthalung Province. A total of 303 pools of vector samples were ticks (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, R. microplus, and Haemaphysalis sp.), fleas (Ctenocephalides felis orientis, C. f. felis, and C. canis), and chiggers (Leptotrombidium deliense, Aschoschoengastia indica, Blankaartia acuscutellaris and Walchia disparunguis pingue) collected from reservoir hosts (dogs and rodents). The 17 and 56 kDa gene of Rickettsia causing scrub typhus were found in 29% of ticks and 98% of flea. DNA sequence analysis reveeled the detected strains were R. asembonensis and Rickettsia sp. cf1 and 5.The chiggers, 1%, were infected with Rickettsia strain TA763, a pathogen of scrub typhus.

Resumen Introducción. Las especies del complejo Amblyomma cajennense, potenciales vectores implicados en la transmisión de Rickettsia rickettsii en Centroamérica y Suramérica, presentan una amplia distribución geográfica en el neotrópico. En Colombia, todavía es incipiente el conocimiento sobre las especies de este complejo, su distribución y su ecología. Objetivo. Explorar la ecología del complejo A. cajennense en Colombia a partir del estudio de su selección de hábitat y la generación de modelos potenciales de distribución geográfica y climática. Materiales y métodos. Se utilizaron registros únicos de la presencia de estas garrapatas en el estudio de sus patrones de selección del hábitat, mediante el análisis factorial del nicho ecológico (Ecological Niche Factor Analysis, ENFA), y se construyeron modelos de distribución potencial con las metodologías MaxEnt y GARP. Resultados. El complejo A. cajennense se encontró en las cinco regiones naturales de Colombia, con 64,71 % de los registros procedentes de los departamentos de Antioquia, Cundinamarca y Huila. La selección del hábitat evidenció que estas garrapatas escogen preferentemente las áreas geográficas (ENFA: 96,03 %) según sus condiciones de índice de estabilidad térmica y de precipitación en el trimestre más seco del año. Los modelos de distribución potencial indicaron la idoneidad del hábitat en 31 a 51 % del área del país dependiendo del algoritmo empleado. Conclusiones. En Colombia, el complejo A. cajennense presenta una distribución muy influenciada por el comportamiento en la selección del hábitat climático, característica que facilitó la creación de modelos de distribución. En futuros estudios de campo, se podrían validar los modelos presentados; se requieren, además, otros estudios genéticos para la identificación de especies del complejo y el manejo de sus potenciales zonas de hibridación en el país.


Abstract Introduction: The species of the Amblyoma cajennense complex, potential vectors involved in the transmission of Rickettsia rickettsii in Central and South America, have a wide geographical distribution in the Neotropics. In Colombia, the knowledge about these species, their distribution, and many aspects of their ecology is still limited. Objective: To explore the ecology of A. cajennense complex in Colombia based on the study of its habitat selection, as well as the generation of potential geographic and climatic distribution models. Materials and methods: We used unique records of these ticks to study the selection patterns of the climatic habitat using the Ecological Niche Factor Analysis (ENFA), and we built distribution models using the MaxEnt and GARP algorithms. Results: The record of distributions showed that A. cajennense complex is present in all five natural regions of Colombia with 64.71% of the records found in the departments of Antioquia, Cundinamarca, and Huila. The analysis of their habitat selection showed that these ticks preferably select geographical areas (ENFA: 96.03%) according to the isothermality conditions and the precipitation of the driest quarter of the year. The potential distribution models indicated habitat suitability in 31 to 51% of the area of the country depending on the algorithm. Conclusions: The distribution of A. cajennense complex in Colombia is highly influenced by a climatebased habitat selection, a characteristic that favored the creation of distribution models. Field studies will allow the validation of the potential distribution models and further genetic studies will be required in the country to identify species within the complex and study their potential hybridization areas.

Abstract Aedes aegypti is the principal vector of arboviral pathogens that may cause diseases as dengue fever, chikungunya and zika. The harmful environmental effects of commercial pesticides coalesced with the development of insecticide-resistant populations encourage the discovery and generation of new alternative products as a tool to reduce the incidence of vector-borne diseases. In this work, through the classic three component Strecker reaction of commercial benzaldehydes, cyclic secondary amines and KCN, a new series of nine α-amino nitriles, girgensohnine analogs, has been synthetized and screened for larvicide and adulticide properties against A. aegypti, one of the dominant vectors of dengue, chikungunya and zika in tropical and subtropical areas all over the world. Molecules 3 and 4 were identified as potential larvicidal agents with LC50 values of 50.55 and 69.59 ppm, respectively. Molecule 3 showed 100% of mortality after 2 h of treatment when a concentration of 30 ppm in adulticidal assays was evaluated. Additionally, in order to elucidate the mode of action of these molecules, their acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory properties were evaluated using the Ellman assay. It was found that the molecules possess a weak AChE inhibitory activity with IC50 values between 148.80 and 259.40 µM, indicating that AChE could not be a principal target for insecticide activity.

Abstract: Ticks are blood-sucking arthropods that attach to human skin through oral devices causing diverse initial cutaneous manifestations, and may also transmit serious infectious diseases. In certain situations, the Health Teams (and especially dermatologists) may face difficulties in identifying the lesions and associating them to the parasites. To assist them in clinical diagnosis, we suggest a classification of the skin manifestations in primary lesions, which occur by the attachment the tick to the host (for toxicity and the anticoagulant substances in the saliva and/or marked inflammation by the penetration and permanence of the mouthparts) and secondary lesions that are manifestations of infections caused by rickettsia, bacteria, protozoa and fungi inoculated by the ticks.

RESUMEN Objetivos. Determinar circulación de rickettsias durante los años 2010 al 2011 en localidades fronterizas de cuatroregiones del Perú, y sus características clínicas epidemiológicas y moleculares. Materiales y métodos. Estudio transversal realizado en Tumbes, Tacna, Madre de Dios y Loreto. Se obtuvo datos clínicos epidemiológicos y muestras de sangre total para cultivo y para ensayo de inmunofluorescencia indirecta (IFI). Fue utilizado ADN extraído de cultivos de leucocitos y de ectoparásitos, aquellos genes específicos para rickettsias que amplificaron exitosamente fueron secuenciados y analizados. Resultados. El 33,8% de los encuestados portaba anticuerpos a rickettsias; en Loreto 21,7%, en Madre de Dios 33,0%, en Tacna 48,2% y en Tumbes 33,3%, encontrándose seropositividad en más del 40% de aislamientos confirmados por IFI. Las pruebas moleculares evidenciaron la presencia de Rickettsia felis en Ctenocephalides felis de perros y gatos de Tacna y una especie recientemente reportada para Latinoamérica: Candidatus Rickettsia asemboensis en pulgas Ctenocephalides felis de gatos y perros de Loreto y Madre de Dios. De la población estudiada, el 81,4% informó antecedentes de contacto con ectoparásitos, el 22,6% eran asintomáticos y el 27,8% habitaban viviendas sin agua ni desagüe, con piso de tierra. Conclusiones. Evidencias serológicas y moleculares confirman la circulación de rickettsias en las localidades fronterizas estudiadas, con predisponentes epidemiológicos, demostrándose presencia de dos especies: Rickettsia felis y Candidatus Rickettsia asemboensis, las que representarían una amenaza potencial para la salud de los pobladores.


ABSTRACT Objectives. To determine the circulation of Rickettsia in the years 2010 and 2011 in border locations in four regions ofPeru and their clinical epidemiological and molecular characteristics. Materials and Methods. A cross-sectional study was carried out in Tumbes, Tacna, Madre de Dios, and Loreto. Whole blood samples were obtained from participants for culture and indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) testing. The DNA taken from leukocytes and ectoparasite cultures was used, and those genes detected for Rickettsia that were successfully amplified were sequenced and analyzed. Results. A total of 33.8% of those surveyed carried Rickettsia antibodies (21.7% in Loreto, 33.0% in Madre de Dios, 48.2% in Tacna, and 33.3% in Tumbes). Seropositivity was confirmed with IIF in over 40% of isolates. Molecular tests showed the presence of Rickettsia felis in Ctenocephalides felis of dogs and cats in Tacna and a recently reported species for Latin America, Candidatus Rickettsia asemboensis, in fleas of cats and dogs in Loreto, Madre de Dios, and Tacna. Of the population studied, 81.4% reported a history of contact with ectoparasites, 22.6% were asymptomatic, and 27.8% lived in earthen-floored homes without water or drainage. Conclusions. Serological and molecular evidence confirms the circulation of Rickettsia in the border locations studied, with predisposing epidemiological factors. Tests confirm the presence of two species, Rickettsia felis and Candidatus Rickettsia asemboensis, which represent a potential threat to the health of the inhabitants.

ABSTRACT

Zika virus (ZIKV) was first isolated in 1947. It is known to circulate mainly in tropical areas and can be transmitted through Aedes mosquitoes. In 2015, an outbreak of ZIKV began in Brazil and then spread rapidly to the Latin Americans and Caribbean. Accumulating evidence indicates that there are associations between ZIKV infection and human nervous disorders, such as the occurrence of microcephaly in neonates and Guillain-Barré syndrome in adults. The current ZIKV outbreak has been declared a public health emergency of international concern. Here, we review the virological features, transmission and epide-miological characteristics of ZIKV and the clinical featrues and prevention of ZIKV infection.

Introducción: La vigilancia de las enfermedades transmitidas por vectores es importante para establecer medidas de control en salud pública. Las poblaciones indígenas de Córdoba viven en condiciones geoclimáticas que favorecen la presencia de vectores que podrían permitir la diseminación y aparición de hantavirosis, rickettsiosis y fiebre por el virus Chikungunya. Objetivo: Establecer la seroprevalencia de Hantavirus, Rickettsia sp. y Chikungunya en la población indígena de Tuchín, Córdoba. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio descriptivo de corte transversal en 190 individuos del resguardo indígena del municipio de Tuchín; el muestreo fue realizado entre agosto y diciembre del 2012. La detección de anticuerpos IgG contra Hantavirus se llevó a cabo con la prueba IgG DxSelectTM (Focus Technologies, EL1600G, California, EE. UU.), anticuerpos IgG contra Rickettsia sp. se determinaron por inmunofluorescencia indirecta y se realizó detección de anticuerpos IgG contra el virus Chikungunya mediante ELISA de captura (Nova-Tec, inmunodiagnostica GmbH, CHIG0590, Alemania). Resultados: De 190 sueros analizados, el 5,2% (10/190) fueron positivos para Rickettsia sp. del grupo de la fiebre manchada, para Hantavirus 7 de 87 (8%) fueron positivos y no se encontraron positivos para Chikungunya. No se encontraron diferencias significativas (p = 0,05) entre los seropositivos de Hantavirus y Rickettsia sp. para las variables género, edad y ocupación. Conclusiones: Los hallazgos demuestran exposición previa a Rickettsia sp. y a Hantavirus en la población indígena de Tuchín. Los resultados pueden ser útiles para establecer una alerta sobre estas fiebres hemorrágicas. Aunque no se hallaron seropositivos para Chikungunya, este fue el primer trabajo de vigilancia epidemiológica realizado en Colombia sobre este virus.


Introduction: Vector-borne disease surveillance is important for establishing control measuresin public health. Indigenous populations of Cordoba live in climate conditions that favor the presence of vectors that might allow the spread and emergence of hantavirus cases, rickettsial and Chikungunya fever. Objective: To establish the prevalence of Hantavirus, Rickettsia sp. and Chikungunya in theindigenous population of Tuchín, Cordoba. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study on 190 individuals of the indigenous reservation of the municipality of Tuchín was carried out; the serum samples were collected between August and December of 2012. The following serology tests were performed: antibody IgG against Hantavirus IgG Dx Select TM (Focus Technologies, EL1600G, California, USA); indirect immunofluorescence technique for Rickettsia spotted fever group IgG and ELISA IgG antibodies against Chikungunya virus (Nova-Tec, diagnostic GmbH, CHIG0590, Germany). Results: Out of 190 analyzed sera, 5.2% (10/190) were positive for Rickettsia sp. spotted fever group, Hantavirus 7 of 87 (8.0%) and 0% for Chikungunya. Significant differences among those positive for Hantavirus and Rickettsia sp. for the variables gender, age and occupation were not found. Conclusions: The findings reveal the prevalence of Rickettsia sp. and Hantavirus in the indigenous population of Tuchín. These results are useful to establishing an alert regarding thesehemorrhagic fevers. Although no positive result for Chikungunya virus was found, this is the first epidemiological surveillance study conducted in Colombia on this virus.

ABSTRACT

Vector-borne diseases account for a significant proportion of the global burden of infectious disease. They are one of the greatest contributors to human mortality and morbidity in tropical settings, including India. The World Health Organization declared vector-borne diseases as theme for the year 2014, and thus called for renewed commitment to their prevention and control. Human resources are critical to support public health systems, and medical entomologists play a crucial role in public health efforts to combat vector-borne diseases. This paper aims to review the capacity-building initiatives in medical entomology in India, to understand the demand and supply of medical entomologists, and to give future direction for the initiation of need-based training in the country. A systematic, predefined approach, with three parallel strategies, was used to collect and assemble the data regarding medical entomology training in India and assess the demand-supply gap in medical entomologists in the country. The findings suggest that, considering the high burden of vector-borne diseases in the country and the growing need of health manpower specialized in medical entomology, the availability of specialized training in medical entomology is insufficient in terms of number and intake capacity. The demand analysis of medical entomologists in India suggests a wide gap in demand and supply, which needs to be addressed to cater for the burden of vector-borne diseases in the country.
